Sandow publications, Interior Design Magazine, is an exceptionally reliable source for what's happening in the industry. As voting for the Best of Year, Product Awards (BOY) wraps up, it's a good time to take another look at last years, Giants of Design survey, check the health of the industry and plan marketing and sales strategies or 2014.

The magazine defined interior design as "new construction and the improvement, modification or renovation of already existing buildings." The good news is that billings increased for interior design firms and most companies were positive on the survey. According to Interior Design Magazine's business survey, they rose 7% over 2011 to and sales are expected to increase from $2.6 Billion in 2012 to $2.7 billion in 2013. 

Firms were ranked according to reported annual fees within a twelve month period starting in July 2012. Two-thirds of the top 100 worked on residential projects, and 80% of these projects were mixed-use condominium projects.  See the full list of the Interior Design 100 firms here. 

Firms were ranked project types on the increase of annual fees within a year. Contract work got the comprised an unchanged 35 percent. 
New construction, however, trumped renovation, 56 percent to 44 percent. 
Hospitality jobs rose 2 percent slightly from 16, making it 18 percent total. 
Health care remained at 15 percent. 
Government work that decreased to 7 percent, for the third straight year
Developers, consisting commonly of designers, project managers, and the principal/partners, project coordinators, site supervisors, and laborers have their particular share of unique challenges as the design is developed, and the building is constructed.

What are Interior Designers Paid?

When it comes to residential projects, designers are the 3rd highest paid team members on the project with an estimate of $70,000 along with the project managers who received $100,000, the principal/partners who received $160,000 and the other members of the building team who received $52,000 in total. Broken down by hour rate, designers get $125 per hour, project managers get $170, and principal/partners get $225 and the others getting only the rate of $90.

In 2013, another breakthrough was expected in Interior furnishings and fixtures. The Top Interior Design Firms then, expect another $67.4 billion this year.
